You should expect your home not only to be cool inside but also to have good Winter Park indoor air quality. Here’s how.

Did you know that according to the Environment Protection Agency US homes are up to 5 times more polluted than the air outside?! That’s right; your in-home air quality may be more polluted than you think.

With 1 in 12 people in the US having asthma, now, more than ever, it’s important to consider your home’s indoor air quality, so you and your family can breathe easy.

Air Pollution

Indoor air pollution can lead to many issues, especially if left unchecked. For example, eye irritation, runny nose, sore throat, dizziness, and fatigue. These issues are usually short-term and can be resolved by treating the cause… your indoor air quality.

There are three types of indoor air pollutants:

  • Small breathable particles like pollen and dust

  • Airborn bold, bacteria or spores

  • Odors and chemicals

Air Filters

The normal air filter can’t hold back all of the above pollutants. Air filters are measured by MERV. MERV is an acronym for minimum efficiency reporting value. This scale ranges from 1 to 20. The higher on the scale, the better the filter is at removing airborne pollutants.

Your traditional disposable air filters have a rating between 1 and 4. They clean your air but are primarily used to protect your HVAC system.

Higher grade filters, like HEPA air filters, can remove up to 90% of airborne pollutants and have a MERV range from 17-20. These filters don’t work with all HVAC systems because they are specially designed and require faster airflow than your traditional HVAC offers.

Change Your Air Filter

Make sure you change your air filter often. Most traditional systems require you to change your air filter monthly. If a disposable filter isn’t doing the trick, think of using a 5-inch thick air filter, which will help clean out your house even more.

Let Some Outside Air In

Another solution is to open up your house to outside air. You’d be surprised by how much this helps. A lot of houses are built to keep the air out, but this is not the best thing to do. This could make your house very hot, can lead to mold and mildew buildup, and can easily cause bad smells due to mold and other issues.

At 4 Seasons, if you have a spray foam home, we can come in and air condition your attic. While doing this, we will bring in fresh air from outside, and it will clean out the dankness of the attic and house. This will help clean your air quality!
