Is There Just One Basic Type of Furnace or Are There Different Types?

When it comes to heating your Orlando home there are definitely a few options to choose from. While residents in and around Central Florida are usually most concerned with how efficiently their AC units are functioning, the fact of the matter is that when those short but cold winter months come they will want their furnaces running at peak performance as well.

Since most people aren’t familiar with all of the choices they have regarding what kind of furnace can be used in their home, this brief list should help. There are 4 basic types of furnaces that can be installed in a home or office:

Propane Furnaces

These are probably the least common of all kinds of furnaces, with only about 10% of the population having them in their homes. However, it’s a great option for people who may not have easy access to oil and gas in their area.

Electric Furnaces

Electric furnaces offer a number of benefits to homeowners in the form of a lower purchasing price and a longer life. It should be noted that they also offer drawbacks, as well. Electricity is more expensive than gas and oil and it will be reflected in the monthly energy bills.

Oil Furnaces

These types of furnaces are much more common in the Northeastern part of the country than they are here in Orlando and the surrounding regions. Still, they have their advantages. They cost about 25% less than gas furnaces up front. However, their efficiency isn’t quite as high, operating between 80% – 90%.

Natural Gas Furnaces

Natural gas furnaces are more popular than any other kind in today’s HVAC systems. In fact, nearly half of the country uses this method to heat their homes. The efficiency of these units is off the charts, function as high as 98%! Unlike older generations of gas furnaces that operated around 65%, it is no mystery why these are the preferred heating providers for most homes in America, although usage does vary regionally.
